Sponsored: Catch the latest production from COCA, 'The Kid at the Edge of Everything'

The show runs April 19 and 20 at COCA's Catherine B. Berges Theatre.

It's a magical adventure story, about kids, for kids.

It is The Kid at the Edge of Everything, and it's taking the stage at The Center of Creative Arts (COCA) next weekend.

COCA's Artistic Director of Theatre, Shawna Flanigan, is directing the show.

"Simon is a 12 and a bit year old, who's feeling a little overwhelmed by their life, and goes on a magical journey through space to meet an alien who feels quite the opposite," she said.

Following a startling sequence of events – involving a lot of fireworks and a rocket ship – their worlds collide, changing the trajectory of the children's lives forever.

"There's going to be a lot of really cool things that happen in the show in terms of special effects in the ways in which the ensemble collectively tell the story," Flanigan said.

Written by internationally acclaimed playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, the play has been described as "Interstellar surrealism," yet children will relate to the real-world struggles of the characters as they find balance and connection. It's a relevant story for parents and their kiddos.

"I think families are really going to find it both a fun play to attend as a family and maybe a catalyst for a good conversation," she said.

The Kid at the Edge of Everything features local, tween talent from the St. Louis area.

"Many of them are 12, or 12, and a bit, and they're very much identifying with this feeling that the children in this show, express," she said.

The show's assistant director is also 12. The real-world experience of the cast and crew is something that translates on stage.

"For all of the adults in the room, I think we are learning as much from them as they are learning from us," Flanigan said.

You won't want to miss The Kid at the Edge of Everything. It takes the stage April 19-20 at the Catherine B. Berges Theater at COCA.
