ST. LOUIS — The Center of Creative Arts (COCA) is bringing a new production to the stage this weekend!
The show, MOTheR, centers on a family who uses the power of dance to elevate their existence.
The Associate Director of Dance at COCA, Kriven Douthit-Boyd is the mastermind behind this next production.
"It's about the mother's love. It's about a young man who is using the art of dance to kind of find himself," he says.
MOTheR tells the story of five women who will stop at nothing to protect the prosperity of their children, and it's inspired by Kirven's own life experiences.
"It made sense for me to bring something really personal to the space. MOTheR is about my mother and her four sisters that raised me," he says.
The production blends cultural and contemporary dance, robust original sound, and vibrant imagery inspired by Afrofuturism which is a cultural aesthetic that combines science-fiction, history and fantasy to explore the African-American experience.
The majority of the cast is built up of the student dancers ages 10-18 from COCA's COCAdance company, and Kriven says they were an integral part of creating the production.
"When I got to these moments where I felt like okay, maybe what's next? Or where else can we go from here? The students, they stepped in. They were not short on thoughts and ideas....it brought something very special and very real to the space," he says.
