ST. LOUIS — Powerful voices and unforgettable characters take audiences on a heartwarming journey of love, empowerment, and redemption this summer as The Color Purple takes the stage at The Center of Creative Arts (COCA).
"The Color Purple is a very well-known piece of work. But they have not seen this version," says the director, Duane Foster.
"It's a story of Seeley, who is a black woman living in the South. And it is her journey to love. But it's her journey through resilience, empowerment and finding her voice, and the redemption that comes through all of the challenges that life brings," says choreographer Christopher Page Sanders.
The Color Purple marks a milestone for the organization. They are celebrating 20 years of summer musicals. The classic story of sisterhood features a cast of local and national talent including COCA alumni.
"It is a really beautiful, beautiful collection of community. And it's a beautiful collection of people who represent the 20 years of musicals in the musical theater program here," says Page Sanders.
On opening night, July 19, they are welcoming back COCA Alumni to celebrate the anniversary.
"For any alums who want to come out, you can reserve your spot and reserve your ticket at cocastl.org. We're celebrating just with the joy of everything that 20 years brings. It's been an ultimate milestone," says Page Sanders.
It’s a celebration. It is a homecoming. Celebrate 20 years of COCA with The Color Purple.
