KIRKWOOD, Mo. — Between the 1992 Disney movie and the Broadway Musical, the Newsboy Strike of 1899 has been brought to life and now you can catch live in the Lou!

Transport to turn-of-century New York City with STAGES St. Louis as Disney’s Newsies takes the stage at The Kirkwood Performing Arts Center. The smash-hit musical features a band of newsboys who become unlikely heroes as they stand up to the titans of the publishing industry.

"People are a sucker for great dancing, great singing, great acting, and that's what you're getting here. people love an underdog. And it's a show about a bunch of underdogs fighting for what's right," says Matthew Cox.

Cox plays a Manhattan newsboy named Crutchie who is arrested during the strike.

"He's an optimist and a go-getter. And he's often referred to as the heart of the Newsies, which is just super fun and wholesome. He's Jack's best pal. So he's right up there alongside him fighting for the same rights as everyone else," Cox says.

Giuseppe Little is the assistant choreographer and plays the role of Romeo. Guiseppe says the contemporary choreography updates the story of Newsies, making it more relatable for a new generation.

"Our version has a very rock almost punk feel. That still keeps it totally to the heart of what this show is. But I think adding that rock keeps the impulsivity of children, and of what the time was, and how they would be feeling. So, that updates in the modern look. So, I think that reimagined version has more grit," Little says.

"The people in this show aren't just actors, they're athletes. And when you see it, you can tell because they, this choreography is just incredibly intense. And they're the endurance and the control that it takes to stay healthy and accurate with all of the choreography and the singing is really impressive," Cox says.

You can catch Disney's Newsies at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center through August 25.
