KIRKWOOD, Mo. — Step inside Truvy’s Hair Salon as the iconic story of Steel Magnolias comes to life at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center.
STAGES St. Louis is proud to present the comedy-drama which follows a group of women in a small, Louisiana town. The central characters are a mother and daughter, M'lynn and Shelby. Shelby has a medical condition and risks her life to have a child.
The original play came out in 1987, followed by a film in 1989. Sally Field’s character M'lynn, is played by local talent, Amy Loui.
"Everybody who sees the show has a mom. So, there are all kinds of relationships that are reflected in the situations that these women find themselves in," Loui says.
Taylor Quick fills Julia Roberts's shoes in the role of Shelby.
"Shelby really tries to make the most of her life. She's very positive. She's not afraid to chase her dreams, which I really identify with," Quick said.
And we can’t forget about Dolly Parton! St. Louisan Jilanne Marie Klaus plays the one and only Truvy Jones.
"I was terrified because nobody can be Dolly Parton," Klaus said.
The entire show takes place in Truvy's salon.
"It's the Sally Field character from the movie M'lynn, and the daughter Shelby, the Julia Roberts role. It's their story. But it takes place at my party...It's my party. Everybody that enters here, I want them to be comfortable. I want them to leave a little bit better than they came in," she said.
The chemistry among the cast is essential in a show like Steel Magnolias, and for these three ladies, their friendships go beyond the stage.
"They gave us an environment in which we could simply connect, and be ourselves and play and do the work in a way that allowed us to not only become friends on stage but enable the goofiness and the fun in us to be able to take that off stage," Loui said.
Whether they’re backstage or in the middle of the show, the outspoken, hilarious, and heartfelt women forge friendships as strong as steel.
You won’t want to miss Steel Magnolias. Running through June 30th at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center.
