Whether it works out or not, Wes Welker joining the Rams on November 9 will be regarded as a good move by the franchise.
The Rams need help at wide receiver and Welker is a low liability potentially high reward acquisition. If he reaches all his incentives, the one year deal could reach $700,000, per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.
No, he isn't the second coming of Danny Amendola. Yes, Wes does have a string of concussions that would make most teams shiver when he gets clocked by a safety across the middle, but the Rams can afford to take that risk with their current slate of receivers raising eyebrows for the wrong reasons.
Stedman Bailey just got hit with a four game suspension. Other than Tavon Austin, no receiver has more than 20 catches halfway through the season. The ones who do get a pass thrown their way by quarterback Nick Foles have a hard time holding onto it. Welker can only make this unit better.
The man has worked with the best of the best since 2007. From 2007-2012, Welker took his pigskin deliveries from Tom Brady in New England. The last two seasons, Peyton Manning threw him touchdowns in Denver. The last time Welker touched a football field and caught something was the last week of the 2014 season.
He went unsigned this past offseason at the age of 34 due to the concussion alert. For his career, Welker has caught 50 touchdowns for 9,822 yards. That is worth a look, especially when Welker was tasting the goodness just two years ago.
He could be the spark this Rams offense needs. They rank 32nd in the NFL in passing yards at 177.1 and 30th in points at 19.1. With a running back like Todd Gurley, any distance a receiver can help Foles stretch the field would be a boost.
Now, it's important to remember Welker is catching passes from Foles, who currently has a 37.9 QB rating. He isn't having a good season by any means, but a veteran like Welker could become an easier target to throw to. Someone who has a history of playing in big games and elevating an offense. The Rams are this close to becoming a playoff threat and aren't crashing down the hill just yet. Welker can only help.
Wes Welker's best days are behind him, but that doesn't mean he can't help the 2015 Rams move the chains a bit. If the race car driver wants to climb in for one last ride, you let him and see where it takes you.
