St. Louis Battlehawks are playoff-bound after win over DC Defenders

More than 32,000 fans saw the St. Louis Battlehawks clinch a playoff berth on Sunday.

ST. LOUIS — Ka-Kaw! The St. Louis Battlehawks are playoff-bound after a 26-21 victory over the D.C. Defenders on Sunday. 

St. Louis (6-2) will face the San Antonio Brahmas (6-2) in the XFL Championship Game on Sunday, June 9. 

Sunday's game began with each team trading field goals. The Battlehawks took the lead in the game after a rushing touchdown from Jacob Saylors with 1:07 left in the half. The Defenders were able to kick a 49-yard field goal with six seconds left, 9-6. 

In the second half, D.C. scored a touchdown on the first possession, but the lead didn't last long. The Battlehawks scored a touchdown and completed the 2-point conversion to give St. Louis a 17-14 lead. 

The Defenders took a one-point lead with 4:55 left to play after a 17-yard touchdown pass and one-point conversion for the lead at 21-20. 

Battlehawks running back Wayne Gallman II scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard rush with two minutes remaining in the game. St. Louis' defense got the stop in the final minute of the game to secure the win. 

The Battlehawks will face the Arlington Renegades on the road on Saturday, May 25, before ending the regular season at home against the San Antonio Brahmas on June 1. 

The winner of the XFL Championship Game will go on to the UFL Championship Game, which will be held at The Dome at America's Center.
