ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Battlehawks have released quarterback A.J. McCarron from their roster.
The United Football League team announced the decision Friday afternoon saying they have decided to "move forward" with looking for a new quarterback.
"The UFL continues to be a league of opportunity and we have come to the decision to move forward looking at new opportunities at the quarterback position. A.J. McCarron has been a tremendous part of the success of our team the last two seasons and we are grateful for all of his contributions. It's with respect for A.J. that we wanted to provide him a clear path forward as he decides what is next in his football future," Head Coach Anthony Becht said in a statement.
McCarron was a breakout star for the Battlehawks while playing in the XFL in 2023. He led the team to a 7-3 record, missing the playoffs due to a tiebreaker.
He returned to the NFL the following season to play with the Cincinnati Bengals but returned to St. Louis for a second stint after being released.
He re-signed for the newly merged UFL 2024 season and suffered an ankle injury during Week 7. McCarron returned for the end of the season and the XFL conference championship, where he was injured again. The Battlehawks would lose the game to the San Antonio Brahmas.
St. Louis will be back in action for spring football during the UFL's Kickoff Weekend on March 28, 2025. No formal schedule has been released as of yet.
