XFL and USFL announce starting date of merged league after clearing major hurdle

It’s still not clear how many of the 16 teams from the two spring professional football leagues will survive the merger.

SAN ANTONIO — After months of uncertainty regarding a planned merger of the XFL and USFL, the two leagues have cleared a major federal hurdle and plan to play as a united league starting on March 30.

The XFL and USFL, both eight-team outdoor football leagues that play spring schedules, announced in September that they were pursuing a merger, but first had to clear antitrust concerns. The leagues on Thursday said they have cleared that hurdle.

“We are pleased to have completed the antitrust review process in connection with the proposed merger of the XFL and USFL and intend to play a combined season this spring kicking off on Saturday, March 30,” the two leagues said via a joint statement. “We are now finalizing terms of the definitive agreement and will share more about this new League in the coming weeks.”

It’s still not clear how many of the 16 teams from the two spring professional football leagues will survive that merger.

The St. Louis Battlehawks are one of eight teams that competed during the 2023 XFL season, and it's already aggressively marketing season ticket packages for 2024.
