Tiger Woods to play with Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy in PGA Championship opening rounds

AKRON, Ohio — Tiger Woods will begin his quest for a 15th major championship alongside defending champion Justin Thomas and two-time PGA champion Rory McIlroy when the 100th PGA Championship tees off Thursday at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.

Woods, who won the PGA in 1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007, missed the cut in 2015 in his most recent appearance in the PGA of America’s oldest tournament. He hasn't won a major championship since capturing the 2008 U.S. Open in a playoff against Rocco Mediate. And he hasn’t won a tournament since the 2013 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, his 79th PGA Tour title.

In his most recent start in a major, Woods tied for sixth in the British Open at Carnoustie in July. He briefly held the outright lead on the 11th hole in the final round.

Thomas won his first major at last year’s PGA at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. McIlroy captured two of his four majors in the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014. The three tee off at 9:23 a.m. ET Thursday and 2:48 p.m. Friday.

The Woods-Thomas-McIlroy grouping is just one of the featured threesomes in the first two rounds at Bellerive, which last hosted the PGA in 1992 when Nick Price won by three strokes. This will be the last PGA in August as the tournament moves to May in 2019.

Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka and Francesco Molinari, the winners of the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open, are grouped with a 2:15 p.m. tee time on Thursday and 8:50 a.m. Friday.

Jordan Spieth’s attempt to complete the career Grand Slam begins at 2:37 p.m. alongside Jon Rahm and Justin Rose. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is off with Bubba Watson and Adam Scott (1:53 p.m.).

Past PGA winners make up other groups, including Padraig Harrington, Jimmy Walker and Vijay Singh (8:56 a.m.); Phil Mickelson, Jason Day and Keegan Bradley (9:01 a.m.); Y.E. Yang, Jason Dufner and Shaun Micheel (2:21 p.m.); and Davis Love III, Martin Kaymer and Rich Beem (8:28 a.m.).

A trio of top players seeking their first major championship are grouped – Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and Ian Poulter (8:39 a.m.). And U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk will get a close look at two potential members of the red, white and blue in this year’s biennial match play tussle with Europe in October. Furyk is playing with reigning PGA Tour rookie of the year Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau, who has top-10s in each of the three majors this season (8:17 a.m.).
