Kirkwood, Webster Groves high school football teams battle in Turkey Day game

Kirkwood beat Webster Groves 65-13 in the 116th Turkey Day game. The game also marked the end of Bart Castelli 44-year run refereeing the game.

KIRKWOOD, Mo. — The sounds of the season filled Kirkwood today as the Pioneers squared off with Webster Groves Statesmen for the 116th edition of the Turkey Day game.

“Most of the people I know, at least in Kirkwood, don’t start eating until after this game,” said Roger Stream.

Though the sights and sounds inside E. L. Lyons Memorial Stadium may be a bit different from your holiday tradition.

“You don’t see much like this,” said Kameron Richardson. “It’s just amazing to watch.”

For 116 years, Turkey Day has tied the communities of Kirkwood and Webster Groves together.

“Everybody from all different graduation years come out to support the football team,” said Richardson.

“It’s the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi,” said Stream.

“We’ve come here for 22 years,” said Shawn Owens. “I don’t think I’ve missed any of them.”

For the past 44 years, referee Bart Castelli has had a front row seat to multiple underdog upsets.

“To have this atmosphere after 116 years and to work this type of game in these two communities, it’s an honor for us to be out here,” Castelli said.

As Castelli called his final game before hanging up his whistle and retiring from the game, he wouldn’t allow the spotlight to be shined anywhere other than on the players on the field.

“I just cannot say anything more about the coaches I’ve worked for and the kids that I’ve officiated,” said Castelli.  “It’s all about them.”

Castelli walked off the field for the last time with the sounds of the Frisco Bell ringing behind him.

“We don’t play unless we’ve got guys like that,” said Kirkwood head coach Jeremy Maclin. “I remember him reffing some of my games in high school.  I got a chance to talk to him and thank him for what he’s done."

Kirkwood will be keeping the Frisco Bell for another year thanks to a 65-13 win. The Pioneers have now won 10 straight Turkey Day games.
