CHICAGO — Outfielder Tyler O'Neill was promoted to the 25-man roster prior to Thursday's makeup game against the Cubs, the club announced.
The call-up was initially reported yesterday by MLB.com's Joe Trezza, who said the decision to bring O'Neill to the major league club was initially planned for Wednesday before the game was postponed to Thursday.
O'Neill, 22, joined the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds after a disappointing Spring Training in which he only played in 12 at-bats due to oblique and hamstring injuries. In 2018 with Memphis, O'Neill hit .388/.385/.847 with 18 RBI and was tied for the most home runs with six. He finished the 2017 season in Triple-A with 31 home runs.
The Cardinals optioned right-handed pitcher John Brebbia to Memphis to make room for O'Neill. He appeared in two games in relief following his April 8 promotion, working two scoreless innings.
O'Neill will wear uniform No. 41.
