SAN FRANCISCO, CA. — The San Francisco Giants are getting the band back together.

The Giants are expected to announce the hiring of former manager Dusty Baker to be a special advisor to Giants CEO Larry Baer where he will also report to executive vice president Brian Sabean. He is scheduled to be introduced today at the Giants’ Play Ball Luncheon.

The Giants reached out to Baker in February and began talks on a role in the organization where he will spend the bulk of his time watching the Giants and evaluating minor-league players.

Baker managed the the San Francisco Giants for 10 seasons in 1993-2002, winning the second-most games in San Francisco history and bringing them to the brink of a World Series title in 2002. He managed the Washington Nationals the past two seasons, leading them to back-to-back NL East Davison titles before his contract was not renewed.

Baker, 68, the three-time NL Manager of the Year winner and two-time All-Star, began his coaching career in 1988 as the first-base coach for manager Roger Craig before becoming their hitting coach. He was hired in 1993 to manage the Giants, leading them to a 103-59 record, an improvement of 31 games from the previous season.

He led the Giants to the National League pennant in 2002 before losing in seven games to the Anaheim Angels in the World Series. He also won division titles in 1997 and 2000 with the Giants.

Baker resides near Sacramento and his son, Darren, plays baseball at Cal.
