Cardinals beat the Brewers 7-4 in 12 innings

Michael Siani hit a tiebreaking two-run single for the Cardinals in the 12th inning.

MILWAUKEE — What Michael Siani couldn’t finish with his glove he did with his bat.

Siani made a diving attempt on a bloop to short center field by Willy Adames that would have ended Tuesday night’s game in the 11th inning, but the ball popped out of Siani’s glove when he hit the ground, allowing the Brewers to the game.

All that did was set up Siani to get the game-winning hit, a two-run single, for the Cardinals in the 12th.

After Ivan Herrera drew a leadoff walk, a wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third and took away the possibility of Siani bunting. His single to left drove in both runners. Siani then stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on Alec Burleson’s sacrifice fly to complete the victory in Milwaukee.

Here is how Tuesday night’s game broke down:

At the plate: Paul Goldschmidt had another three-hit game. He doubled in a run in the first inning, homered in the fourth and got an RBI single in the 11th that temporarily gave the Cardinals the lead and gave Goldschmidt his first game with three RBIs since he drove in four runs on May 26 … The homer was his 21st of the season, tying Goldschmidt with Burleson for the team lead … The Cardinals had only one hit between the fifth and 11th innings, a sixth-inning single by Lars Nootbaar.

On the mound: Steven Matz made his first major-league start since April 30 and worked 4 2/3 innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. He gave up a pair of solo homers before he was pulled after allowing a two-out double in the fifth. That run scored when Jackson Chourio doubled on the first pitch from Ryan Fernandez … Four relievers shut down the Brewers from the sixth to the 10th, with Matthew Liberatore pitching the ninth and 10th, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th … The Brewers had only one hit after the Chourio double in the fifth, the hit by Adames in the 11th … Ryan Helsley worked the 11th and 12th, recording four strikeouts.

Key stat: The three hits extended Goldschmidt’s current streak to 10 games, including the last six with at least one double. In the last 10 games, Goldschmidt has gone 20-of-39, a .513 average, with eight doubles and has only struck out eight times.

Worth noting: Manager Oli Marmol and bench coach Daniel Descalso were both ejected by home plate umpire Lance Barrett for arguing balls and strikes in the fourth inning. It’s the second time they were both ejected in the same game, and both times it happened in Milwaukee. It was the fifth time Marmol was ejected this season … The Cardinals have not decided on what is next for Lance Lynn as he prepares to return from the injured list but he is not scheduled to start any of the three weekend games against the Mariners in St. Louis.

Looking ahead: Sonny Gray will get the start on Wednesday night in the final game of the season against the Brewers.
