Cardinals name former infielder, World Series Champion to coaching staff

Joe McEwing, who was the team's bench coach in 2023, was named as a Special Assistant to John Mozeliak.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals announced Daniel Descalso will serve on the team's 2024 coaching staff and Joe McEwing will move to a front-office role.

The former Cardinals infielder and 2011 World Series Champion will serve as a bench coach during the 2024 season.

The 37-year-old was drafted in the third round by the Cardinals in 2007. He was a member of the team from 2010 to 2014, playing on both the 2011 World Series championship team and the team that appeared in the World Series in 2013.

He played 10 years in MLB across four teams including the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs.

Descalso served as a Special Assistant to Baseball Operations for the National League Champion Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023. The Diamondbacks lost to the Texas Rangers in the World Series.

As part of the announcement, Joe McEwing, who was the team's bench coach in 2023, was named a Special Assistant to President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak. McEwing, a former Cardinal, was announced as a bench coach in January 2023 after Matt Holliday resigned just two months after being named to the position.

McEwing had coached and managed in the Chicago White Sox organization for the last 15 years prior to joining the Cardinals coaching staff.
