ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals have traded outfielder Tyler O'Neill to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for two prospects, the team announced Friday.
The Cardinals gain right-handed pitchers Nick Robertson and Victor Santos in the trade.
O'Neill was part of a crowded Cardinals outfield, and manager John Mozeliak recently mentioned him by name as a trade candidate at the winter meetings.
“As we look to add pitching depth, as well as address concerns on potential playing time in the outfield, we felt this deal worked well in addressing both of those issues,” Mozeliak said in a statement. “We are excited to add Nick to our bullpen, and we feel Victor gives us added depth in our minor league system.”
In six years in St. Louis, O'Neill hit .248 with 78 home runs and 217 RBIs while winning two gold gloves in left field. O'Neill only played in 72 games for the Cardinals this past season.
