Gorman, Herrera lead Cardinals past Marlins 8-5 in home opener

Nolan Gorman hit a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals won their home opener 8-5.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 8-5 in the team's 2024 home opener at Busch Stadium.

The Redbirds got an early lead after a home run from Iván Herrera off Marlins starting pitcher Ryan Weathers in the second inning. It was his first career major league homer.

The Marlins would tie it up in the bottom of the third inning from St. Louis area native Jake Burger. In the bottom of the fourth, Josh Bell and Burger, his second, would homer for a 4-1 lead over the Cards.

The Cardinals would chip away at the Marlins lead after Michael Siani and Victor Scott II scored in the fifth inning, 4-3.

In the top of the seventh, Nolan Gorman would break open the game with a double off of Andrew Nardi, scoring Arenado and Herrera to push past the Marlins 6-5. A single by Alec Burleson and a triple by Masyn Winn would help extend the lead to 8-5.

Lance Lynn, making his first start for St. Louis since Sept. 28, 2017, allowed three homers and was charged with four runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Giovanny Gallegos (1-0) got the last out in the seventh. Ryan Helsley worked the ninth for his second save in three opportunities.

The Marlins are the only winless team in baseball after the New York Mets got their first win Thursday, beating Detroit.
