New York Mets beat St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 in spring training game

Miles Mikolas worked two scoreless innings in his spring debut.

JUPITER, Fla. — Result: Mets 3, Cardinals 0

The Cardinals have found it difficult to hit a home run in the first week of spring training games and on Wednesday found it hard just to get a hit.

The team’s streak without a home run reached six games and 205 at-bats as they were shut out 3-0 by the Mets in Port St. Lucie. The Cardinals are the only team which is yet to hit a home run this spring.

They managed a total of five hits with a lineup that featured only one player, Nolan Gorman, expected to be in the starting lineup when the regular season begins in four weeks.

Here is how Wednesday’s game broke down:

High: Miles Mikolas worked two scoreless innings in his spring debut.

Low: The Cardinals allowed a pair of solo homers, to Pete Alonso and Trayce Thompson.

At the plate: Two of the Cardinals’ hits came from Alec Burleson … The only extra base-hit was a double by Pedro Pages, expected to be the starting catcher at Memphis this season … Dylan Carlson was hitless in three at-bats and is now 0-of-8 this spring … Gorman also was 0-of-3.

On the mound: Mikolas allowed two hits, struck out one and did not walk a batter. One of the hits came on a fly ball to deep center field which Carlson lost in the sun. Mikolas needed threw only 27 pitches in the two innings, 19 of which were strikes … The homer by Alonso came off JoJo Romero while Thompson hit his blast off Kyle Leahy … Ryan Helsley worked a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Worth noting: Brandon Crawford joined the Cardinals’ workouts in Jupiter for the first time. With Crawford getting his familiar jersey number, 35, Jose Fermin switched his jersey number to 15 … In addition to knowing veterans Matt Carpenter, Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt, Crawford also spent this winter working out with a group of players in Arizona that included Gorman and Carlson … Former Cardinal Kolten Wong signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Wednesday.

Up next: Kyle Gibson is scheduled to make his Cardinals debut when he starts Thursday’s game against the Nationals in Jupiter.
