ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals have traded Tommy Edman for White Sox starting pitcher Erick Fedde in a three-team deal, the team announced Monday afternoon.
The Cardinals announced it traded Edman and minor league right-handed player Oliver Gonzalez to the Los Angeles Dodgers. St. Louis acquired pitcher Erick Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham from the last-place Chicago White Sox.
St. Louis will also receive a player to be named later from the Dodgers, and cash considerations from the White Sox, according to a press release.
Edman made his MLB debut in 2019. He won a gold glove award in 2021 and provided positional versatility, playing innings at six different positions in his five seasons.
He signed a two-year contract extension that would pay him $7 million this year and $9.5 million next year. Before agreeing to the contract, he underwent offseason surgery on his right wrist, and he has not appeared in an MLB game yet this season.
Fedde, 31, is on pace for a career-best season in nearly every statistical category. He has seven wins and a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts for the lowly White Sox, who are 27-81 on the season.
Fedde has 108 strikeouts this season, which would be second on the Cardinals. Only Sonny Gray has more with 138.
Fedde now slots into a starting rotation that features Gray, Miles Mikolas, Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn. Andre Pallante and Matthew Liberatore are the other members of the active roster to make starts this season.
Pham, 36, is hitting .266 with 5 home runs and 19 RBIs in 70 games for the White Sox. The 11-year veteran made his MLB debut for the Cardinals in 2014 and was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays at the 2018 trade deadline.
As of Monday afternoon, the Cardinals are in second place in the National League Central, six games behind the Milwaukee Brewers. They are one game out of the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
