ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals have signed three-time All-Star Brandon Crawford to a one-year deal.
The team made the announcement Tuesday after reports said the signing was in the works. Crawford will serve as a backup to 21-year-old Masyn Winn in the shortstop position.
“We’re excited to be adding a player with the winning credentials and pedigree of a Brandon Crawford,” Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said. “He is someone that will provide us with valuable depth and experience on the infield, and can also be a great resource for our younger players, such as Masyn Winn.”
Crawford was selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants. He made his debut with the team in 2011.
The 37-year-old has spent all 13 years of his major league career with the Giants. He has complied 146 home runs and 744 RBIs in 1,655 games played.
He won the 2012 and 2014 World Series with the team, is a three-time All-Star and has won the four Rawling Gold Glove Awards at shortstop.
Last year, he had a .194 batting average with seven home runs and 38 RBIs.
Cardinals' Tommy Edman had wrist surgery in October and is continuing to recover from it. It is unknown when he will return to the lineup.
Edman, 28, is a utility player for St. Louis. He has played at shortstop, second base and all three outfield positions.
In 2023, he had a .248 batting average with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs.
