ST. LOUIS — Thieves broke into a St. Louis Cardinals facility in the Dominican Republic overnight and reportedly held players and coaches at gunpoint.

According to MLB reporter Hector Gomez, the armed men took players out of their rooms at gunpoint and robbed them of money and jewelry.

According to a news release from the St. Louis Cardinals, the crime happened between 12:30 and 4 a.m. at the team's Dominican Republic complex. The release confirmed that the group stole money, cell phones, jewelry and baseball equipment, but it did not say if players were held at gunpoint.

Local authorities are investigating.

“This was scary on many fronts. Our players and staff were shaken up but not harmed. No one was injured, and we will reassess our security provisions immediately,“ St. Louis Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said.

Gomez said two other teams, the Cleveland Guardians and Miami Marlins have also been robbed in recent weeks.

The Cardinals' academy in the Dominican Republic is in the city of Boca Chica.
