The story of Jackie Joyner-Kersee's 1996 Olympic bronze medal

Jackie Joyner-Kersee was hurt in the heptathlon, but she still wanted to compete in the long jump.

ST. LOUIS — While Jackie Joyner-Kersee remembers her gold medal Olympic performances fondly, it's a bronze medal that tested her determination.

Joyner-Kersee, from East St. Louis, medaled in four Olympic games. She competed in long jump and the heptathlon in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Joyner-Kersee worked with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rick Lehman to prepare for the games.

She had a hamstring injury at the Olympics, making the heptathlon very painful. Joyner-Kersee and Lehman did as much as they could to rehab her hamstring and prepare her for the long jump event.

Watch the video above for the full story from Joyner-Kersee, Lehman, and Frank Cusumano.
