US women's Olympic soccer team roster leaves off veterans, including St. Louis native

It's Becky's first time missing the Olympic Games since 2008.

ST. LOUIS — For the first time since 2012, St. Louisian Becky Sauerbrunn will not appear on the women's Olympic soccer team.

Eighteen players were named to the team Wednesday, under U.S. national team coach Emma Hayes. The Olympic roster is smaller than the 23 players who are included on teams for the Women's World Cup and other international competitions.

Sauerbrunn appeared in the 2012 London Olympics, winning gold; the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics; and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, winning bronze. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were delayed until 2021 due to the pandemic.

Sauerbrunn is a captain of the women's national team. Co-captain Alex Morgan was also left off the roster.
