Why did Michael Phelps laugh during the National Anthem Tuesday night?

What's so funny about the National Anthem? Nothing usually, except for a little Maryland baseball tradition that made its way to Rio by way of Phelps' family and friends.

After taking home his record 20th Olympic gold medal (and before winning his 21st), Michael Phelps was not overcome by emotion on the podium, but laughter instead.

As the National Anthem played, capping Phelps' first podium of Tuesday night, he was caught on camera having a laugh.

What's so funny about the National Anthem? Nothing usually, except for a little Maryland baseball tradition that made its way to Rio by way of Phelps' family and friends.

As happens at Baltimore Orioles games, Phelps' contingent belted a loud and elongated "OH!" during the "Oh say does that Star Spangled banner yet wave" portion of the anthem. The Olympic champ couldn't hide his comic reaction. It was perfect.

The tradition started at Orioles games in the 1970's, and has carried over into many different sporting events in the region.
