Why Missourian Brenna Dowell deserves the Olympic stage

She is the fierce 20 year old gymnast from Odessa, Missouri with a move that's all hers.

"I've seen some of the guy gymnast do it, but I haven't seen any other girls yet. Will see," said Brenna Dowell.

It's even known as The Dowell. It's a front handspring double pike, it's two flips flipping forward in a pike position. It's a skill Brenna Dowell has been doing in routines since 2011.

'So to finally get it named after me was just such an awesome feeling."

It's a dream come true for the athlete, but these days she's taking things one step and one or two flips at a time.

"I don't like to think too far ahead because if I'm trying to think of the one thing in front of me that's two months away I'm not thinking of what I have to do right now so I try not to get carried away and stay in the moment."

It's a journey that began before she was even two.

"I started in a mommy and me class."

But getting to this level requires a lot of hours in the gym.

"The last, I don't know how many years, probably at least eight - I've been training about 35 hours a week and it takes a lot of discipline and training and just going into practice and giving it your all every single day.

She's also given up one of her favorite food.

"Well I definitely have to watch what I eat because gymnastics is such a physical sport, but I'm really looking forward to having some pizza once I'm done."

And who knows maybe she'll be eating it in mid August with a medal around her neck, but if not it's still been an incredible ride.

"It's just really cool to know that I'm on this stage with the best gymnasts in the world."
