HOUSTON — St. Louis CITY SC was eliminated in the first round of the Concacaf Champions Cup late Tuesday night after a 1-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo.

Erik Sviatchenko scored for Houston to break a scoreless tie in the 60th minute. CITY was unable to muster a goal despite some quality chances.

After winning the first leg of their matchup with Houston, CITY needed a win or a draw to advance out of the first round. With the aggregate score of the two games tied at 2-2, the series was decided by the first tiebreaker: road goals. Houston scored one goal in the matchup at CityPark last week, leading them into the round of 16.

The Concacaf Champions Cup is an annual competition that features clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

The tournament uses a knockout format and will feature 27 teams that qualified through national league competitions.

The five-round knockout phase began on Feb. 6 and will end with the final on June 2. It will be played simultaneously with the Major League Soccer regular-season.

CITY will return to league play on Saturday when they take on New York City FC at home. CITY played to a 1-1 draw in the season opener against Real Salt Lake.

New York City FC opened their season with a road loss to Charlotte FC.
