ST. LOUIS — St. Louis CITY SC's Eduard Löwen has been out of the lineup for two months with a hamstring injury, but he revealed he has been dealing with much more recently.
The midfielder said his wife, Ilona, has been battling brain cancer.
"You can say like kind of out of nowhere," he said. "My wife has had like serious health issues and it got worse and worse and then she ended up having surgery and yeah, the truth is now that my wife has cancer."
Löwen said he has received support from many friends, family and the club.
"This is also a request honestly for my brothers and sisters in Christ all over the world to pray for my wife for health and courage in that time," he said.
"The good thing was like I could take care of my wife when I was injured but now that she is also doing well it's also good for me to think about something else, and I know my wife is also very happy about that and to see me playing again," he said.
He hasn't played since March 10 due to a hamstring injury, missing the last nine matches. Before his injury and absence, he had one goal and two assists.
CITY SC is back in action on Saturday against FC Cincinnati. St. Louis currently sits in ninth place in Major League Soccer's Western Conference with 16 points.
