COLUMBUS, Ohio — St. Charles native and Columbus Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made history Saturday night after winning the 2023 Major League Soccer Cup.
Schulte and the Columbus Crew defeated LAFC Saturday night 2-1 and claimed the franchise's third MLS Cup.
The 22-year-old made history by becoming the youngest goalkeeper ever to start and win an MLS Cup.
He won the starting goalkeeper position over five-year MLS Veteran and cup winner Eloy Room for Columbus. He started in 31 matches, recording seven clean sheets during the 2023 regular season.
In the playoffs, he started in six games, allowing only nine goals, making 17 saves and recording two clean sheets.
Schulte is a Francis Howell High School graduate and played with the Saint Louis FC academy.
In 2019, he committed to play soccer at Saint Louis University. He would make 51 appearances in three seasons with the Billikens.
At SLU, he earned an Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie team selection during his freshman year. The next year, he would earn the Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and be named A-10 first-team All-Conference.
In 2021, he was named again to the A-10 first-team All-Conference, the United Soccer Coaches second-team All-Region and be named the Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Championship.
He would also spend time on the national level with the United States national under-20 team in both 2019 and 2020.
Schulte was selected 12th overall by Columbus in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft and spent time with the team's MLS Next Pro side Columbus Crew 2.
With Columbus Crew 2, he won the 2022 MLS Next Pro Goalkeeper of the Year and Pro Cup and was named to the Best XI.
