ST. LOUIS – Originally a gymnast, Kaylon Buckner admits she simply stumbled into lacrosse.
Now?
“Lacrosse is my life for sure," said the Ladue senior.
The midfielder had a big day Thursday, even for her, a prolific scorer who averages roughly six goals a game.
With seven goals at home against O'Fallon, Buckner became Missouri's all-time leader in goals scored. The previous record was 333. She ended the day with 340.
"It’s a big step," said the Arizona State commit. “I don’t really think about it. I just kinda do it, ya know?”
“All the hard work has paid off and I have a big support group out here and I couldn’t thank everyone enough," she said following her team's win.
Buckner already owned the state career record in points scored as well, which includes goals and assists. The previous record was 402. Kaylon currently has 451.
“I thought the record was impossible to get," said Tyler Smith, the Ladue girls’ lacrosse head coach. "But she’s been doing this since she was a freshman so she’s awesome.”
Jason and Tammi Buckner are Kaylon's parents. They both know how hard their daughter has worked to get to this point in her athletic career.
“She does something with her strength, agility, speed or lacrosse skills every single day," said Jason.
“She doesn’t really like the spot light so I think she’s ready to get this behind her and just be with her girls and her team and move through the season," he said.
Kaylon was selected Second Team All-Metro as a freshman, First Team All-Metro as a sophomore and junior, and earned First Team All-State each season of her high school career.
Annie Spewak, a 2013 graduate, held the old state career goals record (333).
