3 biggest roadwork projects plaguing St. Louis drivers in 2024

Don't let construction slow you down this year. Here are the biggest roadwork projects St. Louis drivers should know about.

ST. LOUIS — Here we are beginning a new year with some of the same old road construction lane restrictions. But, with that said, most large construction projects are planned for more than a year. However, No. 1 on our Top 3 list has ventured into the "unplanned" delay zone.

These are the three most likely problem spots on the Bi-state's mountain of roadwork.

Coming in first place is the massive construction project along I-55, both north- and southbound from Lindbergh through south St. Louis. This project was slated to be finished in the last few weeks, but now, it will reportedly continue into 2025 due to the contractor damaging the girders at I-55 and Loughborough.

Even though they were using a common method to strip the old concrete, it wrecked those supports that were intended to stay put. New girders will need to be fabricated, delivered and installed.

2. Interstate 70 in St. Charles County

Another big construction project you should be ready for is the improvement being done on I-70 in St. Charles County. A big part of this will be the combining of all of the projects into one. This move alone won't cause delays because it's a move mostly to limit the number of contractors and responsible parties. However, it will be the priciest project awarded in MoDOT history. That's a lot of work being done on I-70. But when it's finished, travel will be much better and traffic at 64/40/70 in Wentzville should be improved.

The last on our list of big projects is roadwork in the Metro East on I-255 up to the I-64 interchange. IDOT crews are mostly working with eight ramps and have done a pretty good job not causing major delays yet. The completion date is scheduled for late spring 2024.
