ST. LOUIS — If you use the Chain of Rocks Bridge to get across the Mississippi on Interstate 270, you've been dealing with road constructs on both sides. But when will it end? That's what what many want to know.
Illinois Department of Transportation Engineer Joel Cumby gave an update on this important project.
"It's progressing well," he said. "The contractor is continuing to build the piers on land and water. People driving by can see we are well on our way to setting up the girders and have begun to build all of the formwork to pour the concrete deck. We are anticipating to do (that) by later this month."
And when will lanes finally be open on this?
"We are still set to have traffic driving the new eastbound bridge by the end of this year," Cumby said.
With of the deteriorating roads we're seeing these days, 5 On Your Side was curious about the concrete substances used in 2024. Have there been any modernizing of the formula used to create roads and to replace older roads?
Cumby said, "We have a robust concrete design. We have it on a hundred year life span."
