Pedestrian hit, killed on MO Route 30 in Jefferson County

The man was standing in the roadway, and the driver couldn't stop in time to avoid hitting him, according to MSHP.

CEDAR HILL, Mo. — A man was struck and killed early Monday morning while standing in traffic on Missouri Route 30 in Jefferson County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the one-vehicle crash happened at about 5:20 a.m. Monday on eastbound Route 30 at Gravois Road in Cedar Hill, near Northwest High School.

According to MSHP, a 2016 Dodge Ram was traveling on Route 30 while a man was standing in the road. Because the truck was following another vehicle, the pickup truck's driver, a 45-year-old man from Cedar Hill, did not see the pedestrian. Although the vehicle in front of the truck swerved to avoid the man, the pickup truck could not stop in time to avoid striking him.

The pedestrian, 59-year-old Norman McArthur of Hillsboro, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to MSHP.

All eastbound lanes were closed as emergency crews investigated.

The Missouri Department of Transportation advised drivers to use an alternate route, as the eastbound closure was expected to last until about 7:45 a.m. The lanes have since reopened.
