ST. LOUIS — After months of only seeing the numbers go up at gas pumps, the prices continue to fall for another week.
“The national average has declined for 27 days straight, or four weeks, the longest decline in average gas prices since the pandemic started in 2020," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy in a news release.
According to GasBuddy, St. Louis prices have fallen 34.5 cents from a month ago, and 16.8 cents in just one week, averaging $4.58 per gallon.
Average national prices for both gas and diesel have also gone down, with a decrease of 8.5 cents a gallon for diesel at $5.65 and 12.8 cents for gasoline at $4.66 per gallon, the release said.
Missouri and Illinois as a whole also saw prices decreases of 11.7 and 16.4 cents, respectively, according to the release.
"Average gas prices are down nearly 40 cents, with Americans shelling out $140 million less on gasoline every day than they did a month ago," De Haan said in the release.
De Haan said so long as oil prices stay below $105 a barrel and refinery production of gasoline continues to stay strong, we could see another week of lower prices.
"But we're not completely out of the woods yet - we could also see a sharp reversal in the decline," De Haan said in the release. "There remains risk of a spike in prices that could send us to new record levels in August, should any disruptions occur. It could be a wild ride, but for now, the plummet at the pump shall continue."
