St. Louis gas prices nearly 75 cents lower than a month ago

Gas continues to decline in price, but is still 91.6 cents higher than a year ago in St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS — Gas prices continue to drop dramatically after dramatic increases this spring and summer.

According to a weekly GasBuddy analysis, St. Louis gas prices are 73.6 cents lower than one month ago, and 14.2 cents lower than one week ago.

While the numbers are a solid decline in recent weeks, they still stand 91.6 cents higher than one year ago in St. Louis, according to the analysis.

Nationally, gas price averages have dropped 15.8 cents since last week and are 68.7 cents lower than a month ago, averaging at $4.01 per gallon, the analysis said.

"The national average is poised to fall back under $4 per gallon as early as today as we see the decline in gas prices enter its eighth straight week. By the end of the week, one hundred thousand stations will be at $3.99 or less," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy said in the analysis.

Diesel prices are also continuing to decrease, having gone down 13.1 cents in a week, averaging $5.14 per gallon.

Missouri and Illinois saw decreases of 17.4 and 22.2 cents this week, respectively. Missouri's average is $3.69 a gallon and Illinois' is $4.39.

"The groundwork is laid for a ninth week of decline, with areas of the West Coast soon ditching the $5 per gallon average," De Haan said in the analysis. "While I'm upbeat the drop can continue for another couple weeks, we're starting to see some activity in the tropics, which may increase risk of potential disruption."
