Grounds may be slick as cold temperatures drop. Here are tips on how to handle refreezing roads.

"The refreeze is an issue and looking at the forecast, refreeze will be an issue upwards of a week."

ST. LOUIS — Crews, like Swinter Group, have worked around the clock to clear snowy roads, after one of St. Louis' bigger winter storms.

However, their work is far from over, President Ken Boegeman says.

"The refreeze is an issue and looking at the forecast, refreeze will be an issue upwards of a week," he shares.

On Friday, the best helper came out to assist and that was the sun.

Melting powder into water.

"The sun was out so pavement temperatures, where the sun could reach the pavement got well in the 40s actually in some areas today," Boegeman notes.

Some spots are shaded though, which means the sun couldn't touch everything.

"So when the sun rays couldn’t get to the ground, those surfaces couldn’t warm and most likely be frozen tonight. As that melts and the temperatures drop you have a potential of refreezing, which water turns into ice and that can be treacherous," he explains.

Dangerously cold temperatures kick in Friday night and so do the efforts of crews, once again.

Boegeman says, "For frozen ice, we will be addressing those with de-icing chemicals or mechanically with plows if we need to."

So, if you have to get behind the wheel, take it slow.

Pat Hamill with St. Louis Auto Truck and Repair wants to steer you in the right direction.

"The hard pack frozen ice will bounce you and take the steering wheel and take you in a direction that you don’t want to go. Just try to hang on to the wheel and drive through and slow down," he points out.

Boegeman suggests looking out for shiny surfaces that could look wet, which can be black ice.

"Keep your feet off the brakes, if you apply the brakes and you’re sliding, it may lock. So, do your best to stay in control slow down and don’t panic," Boegeman tells 5 On Your Side.
