Fight breaks out at scene hours after I-64 semi-truck crash hospitalizes 2 people

NEW BADEN, Ill. — Two semi-trucks are lying in pieces on Interstate 64 after a crash near New Baden, Illinois, Friday afternoon.

The crash happened at around 9:38 a.m. near the Gateway Rest Area, Illinois State Police told 5 On Your Side. Two people were transported to the hospital with injuries. Police did not share details on the severity of their injuries.

5 On Your Side viewer Amanda sent photos and a video of the crash which happened near a rest stop exit on the interstate. The images show one semi-truck lying on its side with its trailer burst open and the trailer's contents splattering the roadway. A few feet up the road, another semi-truck's cab appears to be destroyed with its trailer sticking up in the air.

Hours after the crash, 5 On Your Side crews that responded to the scene witnessed a fight between two men break out, one knocking the other to the ground and repeatedly punching him. The individual being punched had a visibly bloody head after the fight.

An Illinois State Police officer was then seen putting the man who was punched in handcuffs after he stood up. The agency said it was actively investigating the incident and did not share further details.
