Improve I-70 Project update: 3 interchanges completed in St. Charles County

MoDOT brought out the big scissors last week to show off the completion of three interchanges along I-70 in St. Charles County.

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. — It was a big day for St. Charles and everyone who drives through Interstate 70 at Cave Springs Road.

Local officials broke out the big scissors last week. They lined up to cut the blue ribbon on three new interchanges in St. Charles County. Smiles were ear to ear everywhere.

St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann said, "Sounds like progress ... and progress in this region. We've got to thank MoDOT."

The Missouri Department of Transportation oversaw this huge $62 million project that started in the summer of 2022.

MoDOT engineer Andy Tuerck ran the news conference, saying, "Many thanks to all of our partners coming together to finish the Cave Springs to Fairgrounds Design Build Project."

Stacey Smith from the I-70 Cave Springs to Fairgrounds team shared, "Before there were 40% more accidents at this interchange than in similar ones throughout the state ... and we found the average speed during rush hour was 7 mph. That is all much better now."

Thanks to this project, there are modern traffic flow updates around Zumbehl, First Capital and Cave Springs. And it sure looks like drivers are going faster than 7 mph at even the highest volume traffic times.
