ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Last year was the deadliest on record for people walking in St. Louis County, where drivers killed 28 pedestrians, according to Trailnet.
Those tragedies are one of the reasons the Missouri Department of Transportation held an open feedback session at Riverview Gardens. The department wants to hear the community's ideas and worries about the “rising crash patterns and pedestrian incidents" around the Route 367 Corridor in north St. Louis County.
“What are the issues that people see… whether it's people driving too fast… pedestrian safety?" MoDOT Assistant District Engineer Tom Evers said. "Those are probably some of the examples that we've already heard.”
MoDOT has $4 million to spend on safety improvements from Route 367 and Interstate 270 down to the Halls Ferry Circle.
“We've definitely had an uptick of people getting struck," Evers said. "And so we're just looking for ways to make things safer. So, again, we're just trying to gather a lot of information tonight. And we'll come back to the public later this summer, or fall with some improvements, you know, some suggestions of improvements."
Evers said there are a lot of different measures that MoDOT can take to help improve the area and decrease accidents.
“There are things that we can do, whether it's narrowing lanes or we're providing safer pedestrian access, improved lighting at intersections, even different types of intersection designs, so I would say that nothing's off the table," he said. "We have money that's dedicated for this project, and we'll look to maximize those dollars to make the best improvements on the corridor.”
