Pedestrian fatally struck by pickup truck in East Alton identified

The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. on Illinois Route 140 near South Stanley Road.

EAST ALTON, Ill. — A man died after being struck by a pickup truck early Tuesday morning in East Alton, according to Bethalto police.

The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on Illinois Route 140 near South Stanley Road when a man was crossing the road and got struck by a pickup truck driving eastbound. He was pronounced dead at the scene 20 minutes later. The road was shut down as police investigated the scene of the fatal crash.

Preliminary evidence found at the scene indicates that the victim died as a result of blunt trauma, the Madison County Coroner's Office said. 

The Madison County coroner identified the crash victim Tuesday as 36-year-old George Laughlin from Granite City, Illinois. 

The driver of the pickup truck that struck the victim is cooperating with the investigation. 

The East Alton Police Department, Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Division and the coroner’s office are conducting the ongoing investigation. 

No other information about the crash is available.
