EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Roadwork on both directions of Interstate 55/64 across the Poplar Street Bridge could cause major traffic delays for the next several weekends.
Construction will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, March 22, weather permitting, and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, March 25, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The work will begin with pavement patching and will require a full closure of I-55/64 eastbound, including all ramps within the project limits. The eastbound lanes of the Martin Luther King Bridge will also be closed.
Construction will continue over the course of six weekends, according to IDOT. Weekday traffic will not be impacted by the closures.
During the March 22-25 closure, the ramp from eastbound I-55/64 to southbound Illinois 3, westbound I-55/64 and westbound Martin Luther King Bridge will remain open.
IDOT urged the public to use alternate routes, including the Interstate 70 Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and McKinley Bridge, and pay close attention to changing conditions and signs in work zones.
The $5.2 million project is expected to be completed by the end of May.
