Expect big delays this weekend. I-44 will be fully closed downtown for roadwork

MoDOT warned drivers should expect significant delays when the downtown portion of I-44 closes Sept. 23-26 for roadwork.

ST. LOUIS — Drivers who take Interstate 44 downtown will need to take an alternate route starting Friday, Sept. 23 as crews work to replace ramps.

Starting 7 p.m. Friday, both the east- and westbound sides of I-44 will be closed between the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and the I-44/Interstate 55 split, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Ramps from I-44/I-55 to eastbound Interstate 64 and from westbound I-64 to westbound I-44/southbound I-55 will also be closed at the Mississippi River.

The interstate must be completely closed in this location for crews to safely work and operate the equipment. Workers will place girders on the Broadway Bridge and remove girders from the MacArthur Bridge.

‘We know that any weekend in St. Louis is busy, and we have worked hard to coordinate these two major projects to minimize number of full closures needed," said Jen Wade, MoDOT area engineer for the city of St. Louis, in a statement.   "While the interstate is closed, we will also have highway maintenance teams completing pavement smoothing and sweeping, drain cleaning, lighting maintenance and other tasks within the corridor."

Detours, which will mainly use Tucker, Jefferson and portions of Broadway, will be marked.

All lanes and ramps are scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26.
