Driver in custody after hit-and-run topples SLPS school bus on I-44, police say

A manager with the school bus company told 5 On Your Side the vehicle that hit the school bus drove away from the scene.

ST. LOUIS — A woman is in custody after a hit-and-run involving a school bus on Interstate 44 Wednesday morning, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said.

The woman believed to be the driver of the vehicle that hit the St. Louis Public Schools school bus was taken into custody near the intersection of Hunt and Tower Grover avenues, the department said. Police have not yet shared her identity.

The school bus has since been put back on its wheels and cleared from the scene on I-44 near Grand Boulevard.

The crash happened at around 8:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-44 near Grand Boulevard. It has since been cleared.

A driver and a monitor were on the school bus at the time of the crash, according to Regional Safety Manager with North American Central School Bus Jeff Wood. They were both taken to a local hospital for treatment, and police said their injuries were non-life-threatening.

Police confirmed there were no students on board at the time of the crash.
