ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A tractor-trailer traveling westbound on Interstate 44 west of Antire Road crashed Sunday morning, then caught fire.
The tractor-trailer, belonging to Walmart, crashed into the median shortly before 9 a.m., according to William Stamberger, deputy chief of the Eureka Fire Protection District.
The driver of the tractor-trailer managed to get out of the cab before it caught fire, Stamberger said.
Photos taken by St. Louis County Police Department officers show a portion of the median had crumbled onto the eastbound lanes of I-44.
All lanes of I-44 in both directions were closed while firefighters brought the flames under control and the tractor-trailer was removed from the interstate.
Lane closures lasted for several hours while crews continued cleaning up debris from the accident. All lanes reopened to traffic by 1:15 p.m.
