Flight canceled due to severe winter weather? Here are your options

As a winter storm heads through the Midwest this holiday weekend, many airlines are offering travelers the option to reschedule at no cost.

ST. LOUIS — If you're planning to fly into or out of St. Louis Lambert International Airport the week of Christmas, you might encounter a flight delay or cancelation due to severe winter weather.

Several airlines currently operate at Lambert Airport. Here's what to do if the weather throws off your holiday travel plans based on the airline.

Southwest

In a statement Tuesday, Southwest said it was planning to reduce its operating schedule to one-third for several days due to weather and its "resulting effects."

Customers traveling through Jan. 2 are able to rebook in the original class or service or travel standby within 14 days of their original travel date without paying additional charges.

Air Canada

Weather in Vancouver has prompted Air Canada to implement a policy that allows you to make changes to your flight itinerary if:

  • You purchased an Air Canada ticket on or before Dec. 19 for travel between Dec. 20 and Christmas Day.
  • Your itinerary includes a flight to, from or via Vancouver International Airport.

Access your booking via the Air Canada website up to two hours before your scheduled departure to change your flight free of charge. Any fare difference will apply, and the new travel date must be on or before Dec. 31.

Alaska Airlines

If your Alaska Airlines flight is affected by a schedule change or cancelation, you will automatically be moved to the next available flight, according to the airline's website. If the new flight was changed by more than an hour, you will have the option to:

  • Change your flight online.
  • Cancel your trip online and receive a future travel credit.
  • Contact customer service to cancel your trip and receive a refund on your original form of payment.

American Airlines

If your American Airlines flight is canceled or delayed enough for you to miss your connection, the airline will rebook you on the next flight with available seats, according to its website.

To view your new trip or choose a different flight, use the American app, American Airlines website or an airport kiosk.

Cape Air

If your Cape Air flight schedule is changed, the airline said it will contact you as soon as possible via email or phone with your new flight times. If the new flight is not convenient, you can contact the airline to see what flights the same day or nearby days are available.

If you're not able to be rescheduled to another flight on the same day as your original flight, you may receive a full refund from the airline if you purchased your ticket directly from Cape Air or from your third-party booking agent.

If you were offered another flight but don't wish to travel and have a nonrefundable ticket, you can cancel online or via phone and receive a travel credit to use one year from the date of your original flight.

Delta

If Delta cancels or significantly delays your flight, the airline will attempt to rebook you onto an alternative flight if there's one available. If there isn't an alternative flight or you choose to cancel the alternative itinerary, you can:

  • Receive a travel credit for the value of your ticket.
  • Adjust your itinerary online.
  • Request a refund to your original form of payment.

Frontier

Due to the winter storm, Frontier is implementing a flexible travel policy for flights to, from or through St. Louis, Kansas City and several other cities with tickets purchased on or before Dec. 20 for flights from Dec. 20 to Christmas Eve.

If the flexible travel policy applies to your ticket, you may change your flight at no cost or retain the value of your itinerary in travel credits. However, origin and destination cities of new flights cannot be different from your original flight, and you must pay any difference in airfare.

Lufthansa

Lufthansa's flight schedule is subject to slight and regional disruptions through Dec. 23, according to its website.

In the event of a cancelation, the airline will rebook you free of charge to another flight. You can also adjust the rebooking.

Spirit

Winter weather has made Spirit implement a flexible travel policy for flights Dec. 21-23 out of St. Louis, Kansas City and several other cities. Fare difference and flight change fees will be waived through Dec. 28. After that date, change fees will still be waived, but fare difference may apply.

Travelers can change their flight reservations online, by calling the Spirit Reservations Center at 855-728-3555 or by texting "Hello" to 48763.

United

United flights in, out or through St. Louis, Kansas City and several other Midwest cities between Dec. 21 and Christmas Day have been issued a travel waiver. Tickets must have been purchased by Dec. 17 for change and differences in fare to be waived for rebooking. The new flight must have the same origin and destination cities as the original flight.

View your reservation online and select "Change Flight" to search for alternative flights.
