ST. LOUIS — A free and reliable mode of transportation is once again chugging through the Delmar Loop this summer.
The STL Loop Trolley's 2023 season spans April 27 to Oct. 29. Riders can climb aboard from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, with no tickets or reservations needed.
The trolley, which opened in November 2018 after years of delays, ended operations on Dec. 29, 2019, after low ridership. It reopened last summer for a trial program of free rides.
According to a news release, it is funded through a $1.26 million federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Grant, with a $600,000 match from the Loop Trolley Transportation Development District's sales tax revenue.
How much is the trolley?
The trolley is free of charge to the public.
Who can ride?
All ages are allowed on board on a first-come, first-served basis.
The trolley cars are ADA-compliant with wheelchair lifts. Service animals are welcome. Other pets and bicycles aren't allowed aboard the car that may be filled to standing-room-only at times.
Where does the trolley go?
The trolley's 2.2-mile route travels Delmar Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue, from the University City Library to the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. The route includes 10 stops - six along Delmar, three along DeBaliviere and one at the museum. Loop Trolley signs mark each stop.
How often does it run?
A round trip via the trolley takes about an hour, with a 10-minute operator break built into the end of each route, according to its website. Because the trolley cars operate alongside other vehicles and even share the same lanes at times, heavy traffic can impact trip times.
