ST. LOUIS – Friday marks the anniversary of the costliest hail storm in U.S. history, and it happened right here in our own backyard April 10, 2001.

Up to baseball-sized hail was reported along a swath of the Interstate 70 corridor, starting in eastern Kansas, and rolling right across Missouri into southwestern Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service, nearly every home and business in north St. Louis County sustained hail damage. That damage included all of the SUVs parked outside at Ford's Hazelwood assembly plant, and 24 commercial and military aircraft at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

The total cost of the storm reached $2 billion.
