ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Tuesday’s April snow caused more conversation than it did caution.
The snow, which disappeared in many areas as quickly as it fell, was more a novelty than a nuisance.
MODOT crews staged at Interstate 64 and Spoede Road, Tuesday morning. It was not their usual pre-precipitation detail. MODOT trucks were accompanying a street sweeper.
By 10:40 a.m., wet snow mixed with rain was falling at I-64 and Highway K in O’Fallon. In Warrenton, a little after 11 a.m., snow was visible, sticking to surfaces such as car windshields and dusting the tops of grass that may not yet have been cut this spring.
Mark Bauer was at a service station filling a gas can in the back of his truck.
“Just wet,” said Bauer, when asked about the road conditions. “This is stupid! Too late for me!”
The snow never really did affect road conditions, though it did reduce visibility.
Traffic on I-70 in St. Charles County seemed to move along at a normal pace – at the speed limit or slightly above it. Temperatures remained right at or above freezing most of the afternoon. Truck drivers said roads were not slick because the snow melted away.
Truck driver Leo Gildersleeve said, “Visibility is pretty low. Not too bad at all. It’s OK, just take your time and be careful. It’s all right.”
“It’s not too bad,” said Roderick Phillips. “I mean the snow is coming down a little bit but as far as conditions, I think it’s drive-able.”
Danny Kramer said, “Yeah, visibility is a little low, about a quarter-mile.”
In Wentzville, it was moving day for Two Men and a Truck and Jeff Vassall. He picked this moving date several weeks ago.
“Not a good day to move,” Vassalli said. “You schedule the date and do what you have to do.”
There was no waiting at Fritz’s Frozen Custard in Wentzville, where April snow may have cooled down the launch of the spring special.
“It’s been a little slower, today,” said manager Michelle Vasile. “We do still have drive-thru customers, though. They’re coming through with no problem, but it’s been a little slower.”
