Autumn is here, but when will it feel like it?

Fall weather outlook doesn't look especially chilly

ST. LOUIS — Apples are ready to be picked, pumpkin spice everything is all around us and fall weather is right around the corner.

This following a June, July and August that ended up being a little over a degree above average in St. Louis…  with some downpours that left us more than 5 inches above average for the climatological summer.

Despite not hitting 100 degrees this summer, we know it felt like on many days - 97 was the hottest temperature.

Now, it's time for cooler air to start heading our way.

The overall weather pattern around since last fall… is still here.

That could lead to some more wild swings in temperatures, especially as we head into October and November.

A weak La Nina may develop as we move closer to winter as the sea surface temperatures are near or a little below average across the equatorial Pacific right now. There is a 60% chance of a La Nina developing by the end of the year.

That means a rather generic forecast for September through November.

Temperatures over the next three months will likely be near or just above average.

We normally see our first frost around the second or third week of October. This year is may be a little later, especially in urban areas.

Rainfall is trending toward being a bit on the dry side. That may not be the best thing for those that reseed or over seed the lawn in the next couple of months.

With 2020 being such an active hurricane season though, any tropical storm that would make landfall in the western Gulf could increase our rain chances.

Even though hurricane Laura's rainfall stayed south of St. Louis last month.

Bottom line, the leaves will begin to change color as the days get shorter and the nights longer.. and there's nothing standing out as truly unusual this autumn.
