ST. LOUIS — A slow-moving thunderstorm blossomed over Madison County, Illinois around 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
As the storm continued to grow, it stalled out and continued to dump heavy rain that quickly amounted to 2-3 inches in just one hour.
As the storm sat over Madison County, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning.
The storm eventually grew and drifted slowly westward, prompting another flash flood warning for St. Louis County and city along with St. Clair County, Illinois. The heavy rain covered some local area roads.
MoDOT told 5 On Your Side its system was overloaded due to the amount of rain.
There were reports of flash flooding along Delmar Boulevard and Vandeventer Avenue in the City of St. Louis. The St. Louis Fire Department said there were cars trapped in high waters in the area.
Matt Beitscher captured footage from Lindell and Vandenter. It shows at least two cars stuck in the flooded street.
Saint Louis University said the heavy rains caused backup into the basement of buildings on campus. The water has started to recede.
Scott Air Force Base shared several photos of flooding in the area.
