Illinois River breaches Nutwood levee in Calhoun County

The Nutwood levee in Calhoun County breached Monday night.

The Illinois River breached the Nutwood levee in Calhoun County around 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Water started to top over the levee at several locations near Hardin, Illinois, around 6 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said the Joe Page Bridge is closed. The water is flooding Route 16, cutting the people of Hardin off from gas and food.

The river is expected to crest on June 6 at 40.5 feet.

Last week community members worked to build a secondary levee in the hopes of saving homes from the Illinois River.

The North Calhoun Fire Protection District is asking all Calhoun residents not to park next to the Legion / Old School in Kampsville. The area needs to stay clear for if helicopters are needed for medical emergencies.  A state of emergency was declared there last week.
